Profile
Doctor Miguel Ángel León Galván was born in Mexico City on September 29, 1968. He is a Professor attached to the Department of Biology in the Division of Biological and Health Sciences of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Iztapalapa Campus.
He did his professional studies at UAM Iztapalapa Campus; he has a degree in Biology, with the work The Mammals of Michoacán; Master's in Biology of Animal Reproduction, with the thesis Presence of inhibitors of lipoperoxidation in the female genital secretion of the bat Corynorhinus mexicanus and, Ph.D. in Biological and Health Sciences, with the thesis Participation of cell death by apoptosis during spermatogenesis in the bat Corynorhinus mexicanus (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae).
He received the University Merit Medal for his Ph.D. studies. He has been recognized by PRODEP-SEP as Professor with Desirable Profile, from 2006 to 2025. He was a National Researcher Candidate from 2010 to 2012 and National Researcher Level I, from 2014 to 2016 in the National System of Researchers.
Professor León is a member of the Zoology Research Area, the Research Group on Mammalian Biology and Ecology, member of the PRODEP Academic Group of Biology of Animal Reproduction. He develops the line of Reproductive Ecophysiology of wild vertebrates focused on the determination of reproductive patterns, the recognition of strategies and adaptations in their reproductive processes, in relation to environmental variables, with a particular interest in spermatogenesis, maturation, storage, and maintenance of viability and fertilizing capacity of spermatozoa, under physiological conditions and by assisted reproduction technologies, for the conservation of germplasm.
His participation in human resources training includes the direction and/or advising of 16 completed undergraduate and graduate theses (1 undergraduate, 13 master's, 2 doctoral). He has published 22 original scientific articles and one book chapter, including the description of the reproductive pattern of a bat species and the sperm cryopreservation of the Mexican salamander and the golden eagle, contributing to the knowledge and conservation of Mexico's faunal diversity. He has made 120 presentations at specialized national and international events. The above, as a result of the participation in 21 research projects, 14 with institutional funding, being responsible for three of them, and seven with external funding, acting as responsible for three of them, before the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas.
In activities of preservation and dissemination of culture, he has published four articles, one book, and ten book chapters; he has given 38 lectures, participated in one scientific documentary, one newspaper article, and has exhibited five works to the public, in addition to having advised and concluded 38 social services.
Among the management activities, he has held the positions of: Head of the Zoology Area (2010-2015), Coordinator of the Master's Degree in Biology of Animal Reproduction (2015-2017), and Head of the Biology Department (2017-2021). He was Academic Representative of the Department of Biology to the Divisional Council of Biological and Health Sciences, in two terms. He is currently part of the Academic Commissions of Ethics and Green Areas of the Iztapalapa Campus of UAM.
