Profile

Dr. Juan Soto Ramírez is a Professor at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Iztapalapa Campus, where he has been a faculty member since 1999. Since 2012, he has also served as an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Psychology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He is Director of Publications of the Mexican Society of Social Psychology (SOMEPSO) and editor of the Revista Somepso since 2016 (https://somepso.org/).

He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Social Psychology from the Iztapalapa Campus of UAM (1989–1993), his Master’s degree in Social Psychology from the Faculty of Psychology at UNAM (1996–1998), and his Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from the National School of Anthropology and History (2007–2010).

He is the author of Social Psychology and Complexity (2006), published by UAM–Plaza y Valdés; editor of Useless Psychologies (2009), UAM–Miguel Ángel Porrúa; and coordinator of Lessons in Social Psychology (2023), UCC–SOMEPSO, and Qualitative Research: Its Theoretical, Methodological, and Practical Contributions (2023), UCC–SOMEPSO.

Since 2020, he has contributed to the digital cultural journalism magazine Salida de Emergencia through his column “Modus Vivendi” (https://sdemergencia.com/category/convergencias/modus-vivendi/), also available at https://juansotoram.wixsite.com/soto/en-periodicos.

His research focuses on: (a) the study of social interactions and everyday life; (b) applied work in the production and analysis of visual data; and (c) the study of Science, Technology, and Society relations.

He directed the documentary Mujeres de Arena (Women of Sand), which won the Community Citizen Initiatives Competition for Cultural Promotion and Alternative Social Communication of the Federal District (2011), in the category of Film, TV, and Documentary Videos; it also received Special Mention at the Pantalla de Cristal Festival (2011), Documentary category, at the Cineteca Nacional in Mexico City. He has published in national and international books and journals and has delivered courses and lectures both in Mexico and abroad.
