Profile

Dr. Verónica Rodríguez Cabrera is a woman of Binnizá ancestry, from the Zapotec people of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. She is a Professor at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM).

Her academic work focuses on equity and justice for women in the fields of development and care. From a feminist perspective that centers the voices of social actors, her research addresses rural development, Indigenous women, and their intersections with the body, gender, sexuality, and violence, among other analytical axes. She has conducted extensive field research on the experiences of Indigenous and rural women in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, as well as in various communities in the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero.

She is currently examining the impacts of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Development Plan, promoted by the federal government, on everyday practices and experiences within local communities, with particular attention to its effects on women’s lives. Her recent research also focuses on territoriality and gender-based violence in Mexican universities.

She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology and Anthropology of Rural Development from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, as well as a Master’s degree in Rural Development and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana. She serves on the editorial board of the journal Inter-Acciones at the Autonomous University of Nayarit.

She is a Research Professor in the Department of Politics and Culture at the Xochimilco Campus of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana and a member of the Political System and Civil Society research area. She has coordinated the Graduate Program in Rural Development and the institutional program “Bodies That Matter” at the same campus, in addition to holding various academic administrative positions at UAM.

She is part of the core faculty of the Graduate Program in Rural Development and the Ph.D. in Feminist Studies; she participates in the Women’s Studies Program and teaches in the Interdivisional and Divisional Core Curriculum of Social Sciences and Humanities. She is a Level I member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers (SNII).

She belongs to several research groups and networks, including Studies of the Body and Corporealities; The Deciphered Body; the Reconstruir Network; and UAM’s Research Network on Violence.

Her recent research projects as Principal Investigator include:
1. Multiple Territorialities (UAM-Xochimilco, 2024–2027).
2. Institutional Reform and Change in the Transformation of the Federal District into Mexico City (UAM, 2023–2026).

She is also co-investigator of the project Dominant and Subaltern Imaginaries (UAM, 2024–2027).

Her previous research projects include: Gender-Based Violence in Universities (UAM, 2013–2019); Practices and Associations of Human Sexuality in Tehuantepec, Mexico (Postdoctoral Fellowship, UAM, 2011–2013); and Diabetes and the Body among Rural and Indigenous Populations (CONACYT, 2013–2014).
