Dr. Ivett Montelongo Buenavista holds a Law degree from the Azcapotzalco Campus of UAM. Initially, she worked in the public sector, but most of her professional activity has been shared between legal practice, as a founding partner of a law firm specializing in Environmental Law advising both companies and national governments, and teaching environmental legislation and law in general in the careers of Law, Environmental Engineering, and Sustainable Project Design. She is a full professor in the Department of Energy at the Azcapotzalco Campus of UAM.

As part of her academic duties, she has supervised over 17 terminal research projects for Environmental Engineering students and communication projects for the Master's in Law at the Azcapotzalco Campus of UAM and in the Energy and Environment Postgraduate Program at Iztapalapa Campus of UAM. She also teaches postgraduate programs such as the Specialization in Water Economics and Management and the Master's in Law.

She is a member of the Editorial Committee of the Journal of Environmental Law and Policy, edited by the Grassroots Institute in Canada. She is part of the Environmental Management Group of the Department of Law. She is the co-author of six books, all related to sustainability and the environment, as well as the author and co-author of various specialized articles on environmental law.
