Profile
Professor Laura Georgina Calva Benítez received her B.S. in Biology, M.S. in Biology, and Ph.D. in Biology from the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).
She has had the Desirable Profile of PRODEP since 2003. She is Head of the Area of Coastal Ecosystems (2016 to 2020). During this period, she obtained the Research Award for the Area of Coastal Ecosystems in the same way she is responsible for the Academic Body of PRODEP "Environmental Quality and Biodiversity in Coastal Ecosystems" from 2018. She participates as a Member of the Academic Commission of the Master's Degree in Biology of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Iztapalapa Campus and is a Professor of the Basic Core of the Master's Degree in Biology. Editor of the Environmental Area of the Journal "Hidrobiológica".
As Professor at the Iztapalapa Campus, she has collaborated in research on the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments, mollusks (Bivalves), macroalgae and seagrasses, macroalgae and seagrasses in the Pánuco and Coatzacolacos rivers and coastal lagoons of the Gulf of Mexico such as Pueblo Viejo, Tamiahua, Tampamachoco, Sontecomapan, Alvarado, Mandinga, Chica-Grande, Términos, Xcalak, among others, and in the coasts of Campeche and Yucatán. In the Pacific in coastal lagoons of Chiapas and in the Mexican Caribbean from Xcalak to Mahahual including Banco Chinchorro. Several of these studies have been baseline studies with respect to these contaminants. He also works on sediment texture and organic carbon content in coastal ecosystems associated or not with seagrasses. She has experience in biomonitors of contamination related to water and sediment quality in Caribbean coral reefs.
She has participated in projects on petroleum hydrocarbons, drilling cuttings with PEMEX (PEP). In the Inventory of Tabasco Wetlands (IHT) through Rapid Evaluation (ERH) with the Institute of Engineering, UNAM and in aspects of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons Regulations with SEMARNAT. Also with UAM, CONACYT, SEMARNAT and international with AIMTech (Advanced Infrastructure Management Technologies) of the United States and with the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) of France.
Doctor Calva has directed 36 Social Services at the Iztapalapa Campus and three Master's theses. She has published 14 articles in indexed journals, 14 in national refereed journals, one book, 16 national book chapters, one international chapter and four diffusion articles. Her works have more than 170 citations, and she has participated in 45 presentations in congresses and academic meetings. He is a referee of CONACYT, SEMARNAT, CONABIO projects and PRODEP Academic Bodies. Referee of Water Environment Research, Revista de Biología Tropical, Ecorfan, Acta Biológica Colombiana, Polibotánica, REVMAR, among others.
From the projects carried out jointly with the AEC, it was possible to cancel the implementation of shrimp farming by a foreign company in the coastal lagoons of Chantuto-Panzacola, Chiapas, which contributed to its conservation and management. Contributed to the preparation of the Mexican Official Norm NOM-138-SEMARNAT/SS-2003, Maximum Permissible Limits of Hydrocarbons in Soils and Specifications for their Characterization and Remediation. She was responsible for the project "Environmental evaluation and bioindicator macroalgae of pollution in the Cozumel Reefs National Park" (2018-2019) and from this and another UNAM study was how in 2019 a Management Plan was initiated to delimit the tourist activity in the PNAC and to date research continues to be conducted in Cozumel.
