Professor Elizabeth Hernandez Perez is a biologist who graduated from the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and did her postgraduate studies at the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana (UAM), in the Master's degree of Experimental Biology and the Ph.D. in Biological and Health Sciences. Subsequently, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at George Washington University, Washington D.C. USA (2004-2005)
Within her work experience she has held the following positions: In charge of the Coordination of the Diabetes Institute, Servicios de Salud Pública del Distrito Federal de la Secretaria de Salud del Distrito Federal (March 2016 to September 2107); and Head of Medical Research Area, Department of Health Sciences, Iztapalapa Campus (June 2012 to December 2014); Head of Biochemistry and Cell Physiology Area, Department of Health Sciences, Iztapalapa Campus (February 2005 to May 2010); and Visiting Researcher, Full-time Research, (Senior Research assistant) at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, George Washington University, Washington D. C. (January 2004 to January 2005).
She has trained ten students at the undergraduate level and 12 at the graduate level, has 146 papers presented at national and international conferences, has published 38 articles in international indexed journals, has published five chapters in books, and has compiled a book.
She is a full member of the Mexican Society of Biochemistry and is responsible for the Academic Group PRODEM "Molecular analysis of chronic degenerative diseases, and teaching through didactic strategies".
Professor Hernández has received the following awards: Member of the National System of Researchers Level 1 since 2000; Medal of Merit Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana 2003, Best average in Doctorate in Biological Sciences; Recognition to Desirable Profile and Support: PROMEP granted by the Undersecretary of Higher Education and Scientific Research, from 2003 to date; Winner of the XIII Annual Contest of the Research Award in 2004 of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana for the work: Escobar M.C., Souza V., Bucio L., Hernández E., Damián P., Zaga C.., Gutiérrez Ruiz M.C. "Cadmium induces alpha 1 collagen (I) and metallothionein II gene and alters the antioxidant system in rat hepatic stellate cells" published in Toxicology 2002, 170 (1-2): 63-73; Research Areas Award 200, during her tenure as Area Head of Biochemistry and Cell Physiology; and Research Award 2011 with the work entitled "Hepatocyte growth factor protects hepatocytes against oxidative injury induced by ethanol metabolism", October 2011 at Iztapalapa Campus, UAM.
