Profile
Dr. José Alberto Rivera Márquez is Full-Time Professor-Researcher in the Department of Health Care at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Xochimilco Campus. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and a Master’s degree in Social Medicine from the same institution. He earned his Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Population Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, University of London, United Kingdom.
He is a Level I member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers (SECIHTI). He also serves on the Expert Committee for the Dietary Guidelines Group, the Normative Food Basket, and the update of NOM-043 within the Intersectoral Group on Health, Food, Environment, and Competitiveness (GISAMAC) of the Government of Mexico.
He served as Coordinator of the M.A. Program in Social Medicine at the Xochimilco Campus of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana from 2012 to 2017 and currently holds the position again for the 2026–2028 term.
His research focuses on the social determinants of food, nutrition, and health; quality of life, health, and territory; the right to food; evaluation of food and nutrition policies and programs; obesogenic environments and dynamics; and the epidemiology of disordered eating behaviors.
He has participated as Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator in two international projects and four national projects. He has supervised numerous undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral theses at national and international universities. His academic output includes more than 70 publications in indexed journals, books, and book chapters, and he has delivered over 150 presentations at national and international academic conferences.
