Profile
Professor Pedro Luis Valverde Padilla received his B.Sc. degree in Biology from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Iztapalapa Campus (1989-1990). Subsequently, he completed a Master's degree in Sciences (Ecology and Environmental Sciences) at the Faculty of Sciences (1992-1994) and a Ph.D. in Ecology at the Institute of Ecology (1996-2001) of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).
Since 1992, he has been a member of the group of professors in the Ecology Area of the Biology Department of UAM Iztapalapa Campus. On the same Campus, his research has focused on studying the non-random orientation of reproductive and vegetative structures in cacti, ecology and reproductive biology of cacti, ecology of arid zones, ecology of spider communities, and plant-animal interactions.
In collaboration with colleagues from the Institute of Ecology (UNAM), he also researches the evolutionary ecology of plant defenses against natural enemies.
He has been a National System of Researchers member since 1997 and is currently a National Researcher Level II. From 2010-2019, he did a research stay (sabbatical) at the Department of Plant Biology and Ecology at the University of Seville (Spain). He was President of the Mexican Scientific Society of Ecology (SCME) from 2018-2020. The Board of Directors of the SCME, of which he was part, organized the VII Mexican Congress of Ecology in 2019.
