Professor Alejandro Meléndez Herrada is a Biologist from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Xochimilco Campus; Master of Science from the University of Kent at Kanterbury, UK; Darwin Initiative Fellow, UK. He is currently a Pprofessor and researcher.
He specializes in ornithological research and is particularly interested in environmental education, ecotourism, and conservation. His studies in birds and conservation have led him to investigate from the Neovolcanic Axis to the lake systems of the Valley of Mexico and coastal environments. He has been a trainer in birding and conservation to various groups in Mexico City and other parts of the country.
He has published 47 articles and various books, as well as having 110 participations in specialized forums. Some recent publications as the main author of books are Biodiversity of Barra de Potosí, Guerrero, Mexico: towards an interaction between conservation and tourism (UAM Xochimilco Campus); Birds of Mexico City: an annotated list (UAM-Xochimilco Campus); and in the chapters Birds in "Biodiversity of Mexico City vol. II (CONABIO and SEDEMA)" and Avifauna of Xochimilco, Chapter III in the UNESCO-Xochimilco Project. He was Coordinator of the group of professors who teach the Community Analysis Module and Head of Area in the Bachelor's Degree in Biology; he has been a member of editorial committees of the journals Huitzil, Revista Mexicana de Ornitología, Sociedades Rurales, Producción y Medio Ambiente, Revista Mexicana de Ornitología. He has been a member of the Editorial Committee of DCBS and was a member of the Project Evaluation Commission of the Rector's Office of UAM Xochimilco Campus.
He holds several awards for his career at UAM Xochimilco Campus such as: Scholarship of Recognition to the Teaching Career, Stimulus to Teaching and Research, Stimulus to the Outstanding Academic Career, Scholarship to Support Permanence and Recognition for 25 years of activities. He has also been recognized as a Full-Time Professor in the Program for the Professional Development of Teachers for Higher Education (PRODEP) by the Ministry of Public Education.
Collaborator with Pronatura Mexico and Ducks Unlimited de Mexico. Active member of CIPAMEX (Sociedad para el Estudio y Conservación de las Aves en México A. C.), REFAMA (La Red Temática Biología, Manejo y Conservación de Fauna Nativa en Ambientes Antropizados) and COMFauna (Comunidad de Manejo de Fauna Silvestre en América Latina).
