Profile

Professor Sergio Alejandro Méndez Cárdenas is a specialist in cultural-natural heritage, urban development, and the growth of irregular human settlements in cities.

At various times he has been the Coordinator or Director of Research and Territorial Planning Projects, among which the following stand out: Integral Plan and Management Structure of Xochimilco as a Site Inscribed on the UNESCO Heritage List. 2000-2006; Xochimilco Urban Development Program. 2000-2005; Partial Programs of Urban Development of: Santiago Tepalcatlalpan, Santa Cecilia Tepetlapa, San Lucas Xochimanca, San Mateo Xalpa, San Lorenzo Atemoaya, San Andrés Ahuayucan, San Francisco Tlanepantla and Historic Center of Xochimilco; First and second census of producers and chinampas and promoter and organizer of the Cataloguing of Chinampas and Census of Producers in the Agreement UAM Xochimilco Campus - Xochimilco Delegation 1999-2000; First Seminar Forum for the Integral Rescue of Xochimilco Cultural Heritage of Humanity UNESCO, FAO, UAM Unidad Xochimilco and Xochimilco Delegation November 11 and 12, 2002.

He has also achieved publications related to academic and professional life among which he comments: "Climate change and sustainable development" in Veredas year 14, number 27, UAM Xochimilco Campus, second semester 2013, Coordinator of the theme and author "Mexico Basin: megalopolis and biodiversity in a habitat at risk" and "Local knowledge on climate change of women and men fishermen on the Yucatan coast; "La Gestión del Patrimonio Cultural en Gobiernos Locales" in Veredas year 6, number 10, UAM Xochimilco Campus, January-June 2005, pp. 239-272; Los gobiernos locales de la costa de Yucatán: "Perspectivas y proyecciones para un desarrollo regional sustentado en el Ordenamiento Ecológico Territorial", 2011; "La gestión local y la participación social en la planeación de los asentamientos humanos en Suelo de Conservación Ecológica" UNESCO 2006; "Criterios operativos y sociales en la propuesta de poligonal de protección del patrimonio de Xochimilco" UNESCO 2006.
"La expansión urbana en la periferia y la participación ciudadana: el caso de Santa Cruz Acalpixca" in La participación de la UNAM en los procesos de planeación participativa de la Ciudad de México, Porrúa-UNAM, 2002.

In addition to academic life, he has developed professional activity in various positions in the Public Administration, the most recent being: 2013-2014 Director of Conservation and Restoration of Natural Resources in CORENA-SEDEMA; 2009 Director of Natural Resources of the Xochimilco Delegation; 2000 - 2008 Advisory Director of the Delegacional Government in Xochimilco; Advisor on cultural and natural heritage to the Delegacional Chief in Xochimilco. Responsible for the Integral Plan and Management Structure of Xochimilco as a Site Inscribed on the UNESCO Heritage List.
