Dr. Néstor Raúl García Canclini is a professor of Philosophy from the Faculty of Humanities of the National University of La Plata, Argentina, 1964, Doctor of Philosophy from the National University of La Plata, 1975, Doctor in Philosophy for the University of Paris X-Nanterre, 1978. Full-time professor-investigator, Holder C, at the Autonomous Metropolitan University, Iztapalapa Unit. National Emeritus Researcher in the National System of Researchers, as of July 1, 2007, with lifetime validity.
It has the following distinctions: Excellence Patrimonial Chair Level I, Conacyt, Mexico, 1994-2002; Scholarship of the National Council of Scientific and Technological Research of Argentina to carry out doctoral research at the University of Paris, 1969-1970; Scholarship of the Guggenheim Foundation, 1981-1982; The book popular cultures in capitalism received the House of the 1981 Essay Award; The Book Hbrid Cultures: Strategies to enter and leave modernity, received the Latin American Studies Association, (LASA) prize, to the best book in Spanish on Latin America published in the period 1991-1992; Distinguished professor of the UAM from 2001; Hispano -American literary essay Lya Kostakowsky, of the Cardoza and Aragon Foundation for the Latin American book looking for a place in this century, 2002; Honoris Causa Doctorate granted by the Benemérita University of Puebla, 2005; Honoris Causa Doctorate given by the National University of General San Martín, 2009; 400 -year University University Award granted by the National University of Córdoba, Republic of Argentina, 2012; V Foundation Award and Organization of Ibero -American Studies (OEI), within the framework of the Ibero -American Congress of Languages in Education and Culture, Spain, 2012; National Science and Arts Award of Mexico in the category of History, Social Sciences and Philosophy; Honoris Causa Doctorate granted by the National University of the Coast, 2017; Tribute to the research career at the VII International Congress of the AE-IC, University of Valencia and appointment as an honor partner, 2020.
He has taught courses in Bachelor's and Postgraduate, among his practical career professor at the chairs of "Social Sciences Methods", "Contemporary Aesthetics" and "Philosophy and Literature" in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the UNAM, 1977 to 1980; Full-time professor-investigator at ENAH. Position obtained by contest as of December 1, 1976; Professor-researcher of the Master of Social Anthropology, in the ENAH, from 1980 to 1991; Research professor at the Bachelor and Postgraduate in Social Anthropology, UAM-IZTAPALAPA, 1995 to the present and head at the Setubal Olavo Chair of Art, Culture and Science in the 2020-2021 period, at the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of São Paulo.
Among its lines of research and fieldwork are: crafts and popular festivals in Mexico (ENAH, 1977-1981); The art public in Mexico (INBA, 1982-1985); Cultural consumption in Mexico (ENAH, 1988-1990) (UAM, 1990-1994); Cultural policies and globalization (UAM, 1996-2014; UNESCO consultant, 1997-1998); Directorate of the Urban Culture Studies Program (UAM, 1991-2006); Creative strategies and cultural networks of young people in the framework of education and development (OEI, 2010-2011); Young people, urban cultures and digital networks: emerging practices in the arts, the editorial field, and music (UAM, 2010-2011); Towards an anthropology of readers (UAM, 2013-2015) and citizens replaced by algorithms (Calas, 2019)
His current projects are aesthetics, anthropology, and cultural policies; Modes of construction of popular aesthetics, educated, and media in the uses of cities; The main object is Mexico City, compared to other Latin American cities (especially Argentina and Brazil). In addition to the ethnographic description and analysis of operating aesthetic models, I examine how different cultural policies face the quality of life and social participation through their action strategies in public space.
