Mtra. Cristina Victoria Pizzonia Barrionuevo has served as a Professor-Researcher in the Department of Social Relations at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Xochimilco since 1990. She holds a Bachelor's degree and a teaching degree in Sociology from the University of Buenos Aires, a Master's degree in Social Sciences from FLACSO Mexico, and a Master's degree in International Migration from El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (COLEF). Additionally, she pursued doctoral studies at El Colegio de México (COLMEX) and completed specialized studies in Applied Statistics at the Institute for Research in Applied Mathematics and Systems (IIMAS-UNAM).
Her academic trajectory combines a strong background in quantitative methodology and demographic analysis with an interdisciplinary approach, resulting in over three decades of scholarly research on international migration, public policy, gender, and rural development. As a specialist in migration processes following the collapse of the Soviet Bloc, she has coordinated four international colloquia on this topic and led research projects on scientific migration from the former USSR to Mexico and Argentina, as well as on the migration and asylum crisis in the European Union. In recent years, her research has focused on complexity science and network theory as alternative frameworks for analyzing migration systems.
She is the author of 59 articles published in specialized journals, including Papeles de Población, Veredas, Thule, and e-Migrinter. La diáspora veinticinco años después (2018), and issue No. 251 of the journal Anthropos (2019). She has participated in over fifty international conferences, including those organized by the Latin American Sociological Association (ALAS), the Association of Latin American History (AHILA), and the Convegni Internazionali di Americanistica in Perugia, Italy, where she has coordinated the session on complex systems in social research since 2020.
