Profile

Dr. Armando Mejía Álvarez obtained his Bachelor's degree in Biology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), followed by a Master's in Biotechnology from CINVESTAV-IPN and a Ph.D. in Biotechnology from UNAM. Additionally, he complemented his training with a postdoctoral stay in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Wales, United Kingdom.

Since 2021, he has been a member of the National System of Researchers. He is the author of over 40 international articles indexed in peer-reviewed journals and has presented nearly a hundred papers at scientific events. He has also supervised over 48 undergraduate, master's, and doctoral theses.

At the institutional level, he has participated in various academic committees, including the Biotechnology Postgraduate Program, the Division of Ethics, the Divisional Laboratory of Molecular Biology, and the Academic Commission of Biochemistry.

Dr. Mejía Álvarez also serves as a reviewer for several renowned scientific journals, such as Bioresource Technology, Journal of the Mexican Chemical Society, Process Biochemistry, Journal of Biotechnology, Microbial Cell Factories, among others. Additionally, he holds editorial roles in journals such as Frontiers in Microbiology, Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, and Frontiers in Environmental Science.

Regarding his professional experience, he stands out for his role as a Biotechnologist specializing in Genetic Engineering and secondary metabolites, as well as his career in companies such as Femic S.A. de C.V., Química Agronómica de México S. de R.L., Manomax de México S. de R.L. de C.V., and his current position as Full-time Researcher C in the Department of Biotechnology at the Iztapalapa Campus of UAM.

During his collaboration with Química Agronómica de México from 2013 to 2020, he significantly contributed to the development of sustainable technologies, such as the heterologous production of an active peptide against phytopathogens, with the aim of replacing chemical pesticides with environmentally friendly alternatives.

Furthermore, in collaboration with Engineer BQI Gabriela León, he has been involved in the development of an antiviral against SARS-CoV-2.

His career has been recognized with various awards and distinctions, including the Recognition for Teaching Career, the Stimulus for Outstanding Academic Trajectory, and the 2023 Research Award.
