Profile

Professor Enrique Guerra Manzo holds a Ph.D. in Social Science, with a major in Sociology, from El Colegio de México. Professor at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Xochimilco Campus. He is a member of the National System of Researchers.

For some time, he has been dealing with the figurationist sociology cultivated by Norbert Elias, both theoretically and empirically. On the first aspect, the following publications stand out: "El problema del poder en la obra de Michel Foucault y Norbert Elias" in Estudios Sociológicos, Vol. XVII, no. 49, January-April 1999, 95-120; "Norbert Elias y Fernand Braudel: dos miradas sobre el tiempo", Argumentos, no. 48/49, 2005, 123-120. 48/49, 2005, 123-147; "The sociological theories of Pierre Bourdieu and Norbert Elias: the concepts of social field and habitus" in Sociological Studies: vol. 28, no. 83, May-August 2010, pp. 383-409.

Some of the publications in which he has tried to put Norbert Elias' approach into practice are the following: Caciquismo y orden público en Michoacán (1920-1940), El Colegio de México, 2002; "Los pueblos indígenas en el último tramo del siglo XX: entre la comunidad corporativa y el pluralismo" in Lorenzo Meyer and Ilán Bizberg (eds. ), Una historia contemporánea de México 1968-2000, vol. 2, Mexico, Océano, 2005, pp. 305-366; "The Resistance of the Marginalised: Catholics in Eastern Michoacán and the Mexican State, 1920-1940", Journal of Latin American Studies, vol. 40, no. 1, February 2008, 109-133.

Among his most recent publications are the following: "La violencia en Tierra Caliente, Michoacán, c.1940-1980. ", Estudios de Historia Moderna y Contemporánea de México, no. 53, 2017; "El problema de la violencia en el Distrito de Coalcomán, Michoacán, (c. 1940-1980)", Secuencia, Revista de historia y ciencias sociales, no. 101, May-August 2018, pp. 200-231; "La violencia contemporánea en México: raíces e interpretaciones", Argumentos, no. 86, January-April 2018: 177-199; "Faces of the violent habitus in Michoacán: the districts of Coalcomán and Apatzingán, c. 1930-1980" in Estudios de Historia Moderna y Contemporánea de México, no. 56, July-December 2018, pp. 3-24; "Situations of violence and human rights in Michoacán, 1990-2015," in Verónica Oikión and José E. Zárate (Coords.), Michoacán, política y sociedad. Final del Siglo XX y el alba del Siglo XXI (pp. 183-207), Zamora, El Colegio de Michoacán, 2019; "Territorios violentos. Las autodefensas en Michoacán: entre paramilitarismo y neocaciquismo mafiosos," in Premio Nacional de Investigación Social y de Opinión Pública 2019, Mexico, Centro de Estudios Sociales y de Opinión Pública Cámara de Diputados/LXIV Legislatura, 2020, pp. 45-92; Eduardo Mijangos Díaz and Enrique Guerra Manzo (Coords.), Genealogías de la violencia en Michoacán, Morelia, Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo-IIH/Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Unidad Xochimilco, 2020.

Currently, his main area of interest is to explore from the figurationist sociology the links between cycles of violence, civilizational discourses, and peace building in Mexico, with special attention to the case of Michoacán and the following axes: violence, security and State; civil vigilantism; sense of honor and aggressive habitus.
