Profile

Professor Filiberto Fernández Reyes studied Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Mexico, from 1974-1978, the Master in Animal Production (Reproduction Area) at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics at UNAM. Mexico, 1983-1994. and PhD in Experimental Biology at UAM Iztapalapa Campus, Mexico, from 2005-2012.

The line of research in which he has developed is Assisted Animal Reproduction.

The following research projects have been developed and concluded: Evaluation of viability after vitrification of pig embryos obtained in vitro. Bipartition and development of embryos. Cryopreservation of bovine embryos produced in vitro by vitrification, using ethylene glycol and trehalose.

The most important contribution so far was the obtaining of live offspring in sheep from embryos produced in vitro.

Oocytes have been vitrified in swine and sheep, and the results of in vitro culture after vitrification allowed obtaining blastocysts from sheep and swine. The vitrification of embryos of these two species in morula stage, were viable even after being heated.

He is currently working on the production of bovine embryos in vitro, to be cryopreserved; this procedure can be a viable alternative of assisted reproduction to increase the availability of genetic material in this species.

Member of the Academy of Research in Reproductive Biology, A.C. Member of the Ethics Committee of the Division of Biological and Health Sciences. UAM Xochimilco Campus.
