Profile

Professor Ricardo Marcelin Jiménez's research has been oriented to developing applied projects. In recent years, he has studied different aspects of the construction of distributed storage systems. With his team of collaborators, he has been able to recognize the key parameters involved in the operation of these systems, with this they have developed an architecture from which they develop several implementations.

Between 2015 and 2019, he was in charge of the design and construction of a system for mass storage of information developed for INFOTEC (a research center, dependent on CONACyT). The Babel system, as it was called, is a software-defined, scalable, and fault-tolerant system that can store up to 1 petabyte of data. Among the challenges involved in its construction, we can highlight: i) the development of a middleware for the management of replicated databases, ii) the design of a proprietary mechanism for load (re)balancing, and iii) a proprietary implementation of the information dispersion algorithm. In the last part of this project, they were able to connect Babel to the medical imaging management system of the National Institute of Rehabilitation (INR), to guarantee the long-term storage of all imaging studies.

He is currently working on a new system that will run on the Apache Hadoop platform and will be able to grow to a scale of more than petabytes, while offering the benefits of a data mining system.

Moreover, he is interested in the study of complex networks as an alternative to build larger scale and robust distributed systems.
