Profile
Professor Gerardo Kloss has been a designer, editor, proofreader, typographer, scriptwriter, publicist, and reporter. Rather than trying to become a specialist, he has dedicated himself to the construction of a broad academic field for Editorial Studies in Mexico, seeking relationships and interactions between disciplines whose close relationship is not always visible, given that they are considered part of different fields: design, publishing, reading, education, cultural economics, rhetoric, semiotics, sociology, and copyright.
He studied Graphic Communication Design at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Xochimilco Campus, a Master's degree in Publishing at the University of Guadalajara, and a Ph.D. in Image, Art, Culture, and Society at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos. At the Xochimilco Campus, he was responsible for the Editorial Program of the Division of Sciences and Arts for Design (1992-1997); he was the creator of the newsletter 'Espacio Diseño' (1993), coordinated the career of Graphic Communication Design (2000-2005) and now coordinates since 2009 the master's degree in Design and Editorial Production.
He has written three academic books: 'Entre el diseño y la edición' (2002), 'El papel del editor' (2007) and 'Historia, diseño y edición' (2013), as well as the essay "Las escuelas de diseño gráfico" in the collective book '100 años de diseño gráfico en México' (2009). He belongs to the American Society for Semiotics (SSA) and the Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI), and also participates in EuroPub, European Association for Editorial Studies.
He is secretary of the Mexican Association of Typography and chairs the Oversight Committee of the Mexican Council for the Accreditation of Design Programs (Comaprod). In the past, he was president, treasurer, and editor of the Mexican Association of Graphic Design Schools (Encuadre).
