Profile

Doctor Alonso Gómez Bernal is a Professor in the Materials Department of the Basic Sciences and Engineering Division of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Azcapotzalco. He received his degree in Civil Engineering from UAM Azcapotzalco Campus in April 1984. He received his Master's Degree in Engineering, with orientation in Structures in May 1989, and his Ph.D. Degree in Engineering, with orientation in Structures in February 2002, both degrees from the Graduate Studies Division of the School of Engineering of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).

He has taught at the undergraduate level at UAM continuously since 1988 the following courses: Statics, Solid Mechanics I, Solid Mechanics II, Isostatic Structures, Structural Design, Steel Elements, Steel Structures, Earthquake Engineering, Buildings, Foundations, Engineering and Society, Induction to University Life, Civil Engineering Workshop I, Civil Engineering Workshop II, Strategic Infrastructure Planning in Civil Engineering, Integration Seminar in Civil Engineering. And the following courses in the postgraduate program of Structural Engineering since 2001: Behavior of Steel Structures I, Behavior of Steel Structures II, Structural Dynamics, Structural Analysis Workshop I, Selected Topics in Structural Engineering, Advanced Programming, Structural Dynamics, Seismological Engineering, Earthquake Resistant Design. He has directed more than 40 Civil Engineering Terminal Projects, 10 Master's theses completed and 7 in progress, and one Ph.D. thesis completed. A jury in 20 undergraduate exams of the Master's degree in Structural Engineering and jury in three doctoral exams in the same graduate program.

Publication of 20 technical articles in journals, and more than 120 articles in national and international events, on the topics of Analysis, Design, and Behavior of Steel Structures and their connections, in Seismic Hazard, Risk and Vulnerability of Structures, in Studies of amplification, local effects, and analysis of earthquake accelerograms. Participation in the following research projects: "Destructive Potential of Earthquakes"; "Seismic Hazard and Definition of Seismic Scenarios in Mexico"; "Description of intensities and behavior of structures during recent earthquakes"; "Analysis of Soil-Structure Interaction resolved with Surface Foundations"; "Dynamic Behavior of Steel Structures". "Operation and maintenance of the UAM accelerographic network". Participation in the projects sponsored by CONACYT: "Intensity Map of the 1985 Earthquake"; "Resistance Requirements in Concrete Buildings", "Seismic Amplification in Chilpancingo Guerrero"; and "Seismic Risk in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo." And in the projects sponsored by the Government of the D. F. (ISC): "Study of the observance of the Building Regulations and its complementary Technical Norms", "Structured buildings with transfer slabs: "Study of the damage caused by the earthquake of September 2017."

Head of the Structures Area of the Materials Department from May 2003 to February 2009. Coordinator of the Civil Engineering Degree from February 2009 to 2013. Member of the Basic Sciences and Engineering Review Committee, Member of the Engineering Review Committee (2015-2017), Member of the Resources Review Committee, Member of the Academic Council.

Candidate to National Researcher by the SNI, from 1990 to 1994. Recognition of the PROMEP desirable profile 2004-2019. Academic Permanence Support Scholarship from 1989 to 2019. Permanence Scholarship in 1990, and continuously from 1993 to March 2020. Scholarship to Support the Teaching Career: continuously from 1993 to date. Teaching and Research Incentive (EDI) in 1990, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2005, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018.

Structural engineer in several design offices, among them: ISTME SA (ICA) during 1984, ULTRA ING from 1984 to 1985, COLINAS DE BUEN from 1991 to 1993. Consulting Engineer in several structural projects from 1990 to date.
