Dr. Marcela Vergara Onofre earned her Master’s degree in Reproductive Biology and her Ph.D. in Biological and Health Sciences from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), Iztapalapa Campus. She also holds a Master’s degree in Educational Sciences with a specialization in Research from the Universidad del Valle de México (UVM).

Throughout her academic and professional career, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to teaching. She has taught in the Core Curriculum of the Division of Biological and Health Sciences (CBS), in the learning units Fundamental Cellular Processes and Energy and the Use of Fundamental Substances. In the undergraduate program in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, she has taught the module Prescription of Medications and Immunization Protocols. She has also contributed to graduate education in the Master’s Program in Experimental Biology (UAM-Iztapalapa), and in the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Agricultural Sciences (UAM-Xochimilco), where she has served as coordinator of the master’s program since 2017.

She is the founder of the Animal Reproductive Biochemistry Laboratory within the Department of Agricultural and Animal Production, and was head of the Water and Soil Laboratory from 2014 to 2020. She has been actively involved in academic committees and collegial bodies, including the Academic Council of the Division of Biological Sciences (2019–2020), the Academic Committee of the Master’s in Agricultural Sciences (2014–2017), and the Teaching Support Group (GAD) for the Prescription of Medications and Immunization Protocols module (since 2018). She also participated in curriculum update committees for the learning units of Fundamental Cellular Processes, Energy and the Use of Fundamental Substances, and the Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science undergraduate program.

Dr. Vergara Onofre has supervised and mentored 35 undergraduate students from programs such as Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, Pharmaceutical Biological Chemistry, and Biology. She has also participated in 15 master’s thesis committees and four doctoral committees, two of which are currently active.

Her scientific output includes more than 30 research articles published in peer-reviewed international journals, along with over 70 presentations at national and international conferences. She is a member of the Mexican National System of Researchers (SNII), where she has held the rank of Candidate (1995, 2008–2011, 2014–2017) and Level I Researcher.

Among her academic distinctions are the best GPA of her undergraduate cohort, graduation with honors from her Master’s in Education, and the Merit Medal awarded for her doctoral achievements. She also served as Chair of the Chemistry Area Academic Committee at the Universidad del Valle de México during several terms between 2005 and 2015.
