Profile

Professor Iris Rocío Santillán Ramírez was born in Mexico City, has a law degree from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Azcapotzalco Campus, a Master's Degree in Comparative Criminal Systems and Social Problems from the University of Barcelona, a Master's Degree in Criminology and a Ph.D. in Criminal Sciences with a specialization in Criminology and Criminal Policy from the National Institute of Criminal Sciences. She is a full time Professor and Researcher level C, National Researcher level I, Full Member of the Mexican Academy of Criminology; she is part of the Violence Research Network of the UAM and the National Network for the Consolidation of the Rule of Law and the Criminal Justice System (ANUIES).

For 20 years, she has been dedicated to teaching and research. Her research interests are gender-based violence against women, sexual crimes, and women's human rights. She has published several articles in national and international journals and books. She has written two books: Violación y culpa, and Matar para vivir: análisis jurídico penal y criminológico de casos de mujeres homicidas con antecedentes de violencia familiar, both published by Ubijus. She coordinated, together with a couple of colleagues, the publication of the book: Feminicidio y Violencia Feminicida en México Brasil from Tirant lo blanch publishing house.

In 2015 the Women's Institute of the Federal District awarded her the Omecíhuatl Medal for her performance in favor of women's human rights. She was part of the Working Group for the activation of the first Gender Violence Alert in Mexico City. Since the end of 2018, she has been responsible for the Permanent Seminar on Gender Studies and Violence against Women.

From January to June 2021 she served as Deputy Ombudsman of the Defensoría de los Derechos Universitarios.
