Research interests
• Community structure of rotifers, cladocerans and copepods in different bodies of water
•
Isolate and cultivate rotifers of the genus Brachionus from freshwater and brackish water
•
Carry out the biological characterization of the genus Brachionus rotifer strains of commercial interest
•
Implement optimal techniques for mass cultivation of selected rotifer strains for aquaculture purposes
•
Preparation and permanent updating of the taxonomic list of rotifers found in water bodies in Mexico
Profile
Professor Gabriela Garza Mouriño completed her undergraduate studies in Biology and her Ph.D. in Biological and Health Sciences at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM). She participated in the Rancho Santa Elena Agricultural Production Unit administered by UAM. She supported the foundation of the Laboratories of Reproduction and Genetics of Fish, Rotiferology and Molecular Biology of Plankton, and the Laboratory of Intelligence, Innovation and Technology Transfer, in the latter two she collaborates to date.
She is currently Head of the Research Area of Development and Management of Aquatic Natural Resources. She was Representative of UAM Xochimilco Campus FOMES-PROMEP during the two calls and was responsible for the Biology Olympiad at the State level for five consecutive years. Participant in several agreements between UAM Xochimilco Campus and IRD of France. The last joint product is the book: Ecology of the Sontecomapan Lagoon, Veracruz (Castellanos-Páez M.E., Esquivel-Herrera A., Aldeco-Ramírez J. and Pagano M. Eds.), UAM Xochimilco Campus and IRD Editions.
She specializes in the ecology and production of zooplankton in shallow water bodies, with a particular interest in the phylum Rotifera. In the last five years, she has presented 14 papers in specialized events, five refereed publications in high impact journals, and two book chapters. She has collaborated with other Departments of the Biological Sciences Division, providing advice and training in optical microscopy, photomicrography, and digital image analysis.
For 33 years, she has worked in technology transfer with agricultural producers in different communities in the areas of production, nutrition, health, and administration. In recent years she has designed Stevia mother plant and seedling plantations and operated Stevia rebaudiana production and advisory programs at the international level. He has also participated in industry for the development of innovative products with economic potential in the areas of nutrition, breeding, prevention and control of pests and diseases.
She works with general purpose programming language C++, Arduino and Python for the development and operation of prototypes for the systematization of the management and maintenance of phytoplankton and zooplankton strains. In the field of digital image analysis Image Pro from Media Cyberntics and ImageJ. For the management of LMS platforms she develops as administrator of the Neo Platform among others. For the management and systematization of databases, she administers and designs databases in File Maker Advanced and Pro. Preferably working with iOS operating system.
