Profile

Professor Oscar M. González Cuevas was born in Mérida, Yucatán in 1936. He graduated as a Civil Engineer at the Universidad de Yucatán (Mexico) in 1960. He got his Master's degree as well as his PhD in Structural Engineering at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), in 1963 and 1968, respectively.

He was a structural engineer in Bufete Industrial (a consulting firm), in Secretaría de Marina (design and building of ports facilities), and the Mexican Cement and Concrete Institute. Private consulting in structural engineering.

He began an academic career at UNAM, as a Professor in the Engineering Institute and as an academic official in the Graduate Department of the Engineering School.

In 1974 he was incorporated as a co-founder of a new university in Mexico, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM). He hold several important positions and was designated Rector General (Chancellor) from 1985 to 1989, and a member of the Governing Board from 1992 to 2000. 

He has been a Professor from 1974 to the present. Among other appointments, he is a former President of the Academy of Engineering of Mexico and the Mexican Society of Structural Engineering. He is now an Honorary Member of these institutions.

Main publications (in Spanish): "Fundamentals of Reinforced Concrete", "Structural Analysis", "A History of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana: 25 Years", Engineering and Technology Volume of "Cosmos Encyclopedia of Science and Technology in Mexico", and "A History of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana: 45 Years". (In English): "Strength and Deformation of Reinforced Concrete Elements", in Reinforced Concrete Engineering, Boris Bresler Ed., John Wiley & Sons". His fields of research are structural engineering and higher education.

Main awards: Doctor Honoris Causa, Universidad de Yucatán; “El Registro”, Mexican Cement and Concrete Institute; Excellence in Engineering Teaching, Fundación ICA; Distinguished Professor, UAM; Academic Merit Recognition, National Association of Engineering Schools; Professional Career Recognition, Colegio de Ingenieros Civiles de México, and Eligio Ancona Medal, Gobierno del Estado de Yucatán.
