Profile

Professor María Teresa Núñez Cardona was born in February 1960 in Coyoacán, Mexico City. She has a degree in Biology, Faculty of Sciences, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Ph.D. in Microbiology, Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. Research in the study of environmental bacteria (water, soil, air, compost, etc.) and bacteria associated with living organisms (animals, plants, and humans). Training of human resources for undergraduate and graduate students in Biology, Masters in Applied Ecology and Agricultural Sciences, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Xochimilco Campus.

Participation in research groups for the study of medicinal plants: study of bacteria producing enzymes, polysaccharides, fatty acids, pigments, and other metabolites useful in human and environmental health. Specialist in the study of photosynthetic bacteria from aquatic environments (marine, wetlands, and extreme environments). Dissemination of ancient and current cultures of Mexico.

Participant in the research projects: Biological Processes and Mechanisms of the Gulf of Mexico (funded by CONACYT. Institutions: UAM Xochimilco Campus ICMyL-UNAM); "Program of the Mexican Network of Extremophiles to promote and strengthen humanistic, scientific, and technological vocations in relation to the study, conservation and use of Mexican extreme ecosystems as national heritage" (Responsible: UAEM, more than 20 Mexican institutions participate, supported by CONACyT, 2020). Technical Responsible, at UAM Xochimilco Campus, for the project "Study of atmospheric pollutants, as risk factors to the health of the population" (SEP-CONACyT; participants: UAM Xochimilco Campus, ININ. INER approved in 2015-2020).

Responsible for the Academic Group Structure and Functioning of Biosystems; Head of the Research Area: Structure and Functioning of Renewable Natural Resources. Responsible for the research projects Hydrobiological studies in the region of Tuxpan-Tampamachoco, Veracruz and the Gulf of Mexico. Planktonic productivity (2013-2019). Composition study of heterotrophic and folotrophic bacteria from environmental samples from different regions of Mexico (2011-present) Participant in: Neotropical wetland La Mixtequilla: biotic natural resources and environmental services (UAM Xochimilco Campus). Representative of the academic staff of the DEHA in the H. Council of the Division of Biological and Health Sciences: President in the Review Commission of the Division of Biological and Health Sciences (UAM Xochimilco Campus), the Commission for the granting of the scholarship of the Teaching Career of the Division of CBS and the Commission responsible for the design of the Plans and Programs of Study of the Master in Applied Ecology (founder, teacher and thesis director) and the Master in Agricultural Sciences (thesis director).

Associate Editor of the journals Hidrobiológica (2011-present. UAM Iztapalapa Campus) and Sociedades Rurales, Producción y Medio Ambiente (UAM Xochimilco Campus). Member of the Commission for Solid Waste Management of Mexico City (2011-2012). Full member of the Mexican Society of Microbiology. Member of the Mexican Network "Extreme Ecosystems and Extremophilic Organisms" (2019-current); Qualifying Jury for the "Ciudad Capital: Heberto Castillo Martínez Awards" (2008 and 2009). Organizer of commented film cycles and various academic events (Biologist's Day, 1st Meeting on Applied Ecology, Homage to Dr. Martha Signoret Poillon). Recognition of papers presented at national and international congresses; publications in national and international journals, as well as book chapters.
