Profile

Dr. Rainer Enrique Hamel Wilcke is a Full Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Iztapalapa Campus.

He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Frankfurt, Germany, earned in 1988. His research disciplines include Sociolinguistics, Applied Linguistics, Anthropology of Education, and Discourse Analysis. His areas of focus encompass bilingualism and bilingual education, language policies, and sociolinguistic processes.

Dr. Hamel Wilcke holds prominent roles in various projects and programs, such as coordinating the ongoing project "Language Policies in Latin America" by ALFAL (Association of Linguistics and Philology of Latin America), directing the interinstitutional program "Indigenous Community and Bilingual Intercultural Education" at UAM-UPN, and serving as a member of the UNESCO Chair on Language Policy for Multilingualism, Mexico Subsite UAM.

Among his academic accolades, he has been awarded the Best Doctoral Thesis Prize by INAH in 1989 and the UAM Prize for the Best Research in Social Sciences in 1992. Moreover, he has been a member of the National System of Researchers (SNI) since 1984 and the Mexican Academy of Sciences since 1992.

Dr. Hamel Wilcke has authored over 80 publications in Spanish, English, French, and German. Additionally, he has shared his expertise as a visiting professor and researcher at renowned universities worldwide, including Stanford, UC Santa Barbara, and UC San Diego in the USA, as well as institutions in Brazil and Germany.
