Profile

Dr. Daniel Hugo Villavicencio Carbajal holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Sociology and Innovation from the University of Lyon, France, a degree he earned with honors in June 1989. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Xochimilco Campus, in 1982.

Since 1987, he has served as a research professor at the Xochimilco Campus of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), where he teaches in the graduate programs in Economics, Management, and Innovation Policy, as well as in the doctoral programs in Social Sciences and Social Studies. He is currently a member of UAM’s Governing Board for the 2022–2028 term.

His areas of specialization include sustainable innovation, science, technology, and innovation (STI) policy, as well as industrial development.

Among his main academic and professional distinctions are:

• Member of the National System of Researchers (SNII) uninterruptedly since 1990, currently holding Level III.
• Member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences since 2010.
• Vice President of the Mexican Association of Directors of Applied Research and Technological Development (ADIAT) from 2013 to 2017.
• Member of scientific committees for various national and international academic journals.

His academic output includes over 60 articles in specialized journals and book chapters, as well as the editing of 10 books and four special journal issues published in English, French, and Spanish. He has supervised 27 master’s theses and 15 doctoral dissertations on topics related to the sociology and economics of innovation.

He has served as a visiting professor at four French universities, and in 2000 he was recognized as a researcher of excellence by France’s National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS); he also held the “Simón Bolívar” Chair at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Latin America (IHEAL) at the Sorbonne in Paris in 1995.

He has led or participated in research projects funded by the European Union, UNESCO, the IDB, IDRC, and CONACYT, focused on science, technology, and innovation. He has also served on scientific evaluation committees for institutions such as FLACSO, COLEF, CONACYT, UAM, ANR in France, and the European Commission.

As a consultant, he has advised CONACYT and the Ministry of Economy on the design and evaluation of programs to promote STI. He has also collaborated with the IDB, OECD, and UNESCO on projects assessing national and regional STI capacities in Mexico and other Latin American countries.

At the state level, he has worked with the Science and Technology Councils of Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Michoacán, Yucatán, Guanajuato, Querétaro, and Baja California Sur, developing studies, diagnostics, and strategic plans in science, technology, and innovation.
