Professor Joaquin Azpiroz Leehan is a second generation graduate in Biomedical Engineering from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Iztapalapa Campus. He obtained his M.Sc. degree in Biomedical Engineering from UAM Iztapalapa Campus in 1988 and his Ph.D. from Université de Technologie de Compiègne in 1992. He was Head of the Electronics Laboratory of the Physiology and Biophysics Department at CINVESTAV (1989-1981). He is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at UAM Iztapalapa Campus.
At UAM, he has worked as Coordinator of the Research Laboratory in Computing and Signal Processing (LICPOS) of the Biomedical Engineering Area at Unidad Iztapalapa (1983-1988), twice as Head of the Biomedical Digital Signal and Image Processing Research Area (LICPOS) in 1993 and 2018, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering (1993-1997), Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Biomedical Engineering, Coordinator of the Scientific Committee of CI3M, National Laboratory for Research in Imaging and Medical Instrumentation of the UAM (1996 to date), faculty representative to the Divisional Council and member of the Engineering Review Committee.
He has won twice the Instrumentation Contest of the Mexican Society of Physiological Sciences, the University Merit Medal in 1988, and twice winner of textbook and didactic material contests for the books ""Procesamiento de Imágenes Biomédicas"" and ""Imagenología Médica"". His students have twice won the prize for the best student paper at the National Congress of Biomedical Engineering of the Mexican Society of Biomedical Engineering.
Member of the administrative committee (ADCOM-2009 and 2022) of the IEEE Medical and Biological Engineering Society (EMBS). Program Chair, IEEE-EMBC 2003 International Conference in Cancun, Mexico, and IEEE-EMBC 2021 International Conference in Guadalajara, Mexico, Senior member. Associate Editor for the journal Transactions on Biomedical Engineering and IEEE Transactions on information technology and biomedicine, editor for the Revista Mexicana de Ingeniería Biomédica. Member of the International Editorial Board of ITBE (French Journal of IB).
He has directed 25 undergraduate, 16 master's, and five doctoral projects and theses. He has had 68 publications of articles, two books, and four chapters in books.
His lines of research have been Architectures of processors for biomedical signals and images, Biomedical image processing, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Biomedical Engineering Education, and Design and development of medical devices.
