Dr. Francisco Javier Esteinou Madrid is a Full Professor-Researcher in the Department of Education and Communication at the Autonomous Metropolitan University, Xochimilco Campus, in Mexico City. With an extensive academic and professional career, he is widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in the field of communication studies in Mexico and Latin America.
He was named “Member Emeritus” of the National System of Researchers in 2022 and honored as a “Distinguished Professor” by the Autonomous Metropolitan University in 2018. In 2024, he received the Ricardo Flores Magón Mexican National Journalism Award, granted by the Federation of Associations of Mexican Journalists (FAPERMEX) and the National College of Journalism Graduates (CONALIPE). He has been awarded the National Journalism Award (PNP) on three occasions: in 2004 by the National Journalism Award Council, and in 2010 and 2014 by the Journalists’ Club of Mexico City. His recognitions also include the Pagés Llergo National Communication Award (2011), presented by Siempre! Magazine and the Pagés Llergo Foundation; the Gabino Barreda Silver Medal from UNAM (1985); the National Essay Award from the Institute for Transparency and Access to Public Information of Quintana Roo (ITAIPQROO, 2008); and the CIESPAL-Frederick Ebert International Research Award (1984), in Quito, Ecuador.
He is a founding Vice President of the Mexican Association of Communication Researchers (AMIC) and an Honorary Member of the National Council for the Teaching and Research of Communication Sciences (CONEICC). He is also a Founding Member of the Mexican Academy of Communication (2004–2024) and a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Esteinou has actively participated in a wide range of citizen councils related to public media and communication policy. He was a member of the Advisory Council of the political supplement Enfoque in the Reforma Newspaper (2002–2003), and served on the Citizen Programming Council of Citizen Radio XEQK, part of the Mexican Radio Institute (IMER), from 2002 to 2007. He was also an Honorary Member of the Citizen Council of the Public Broadcasting System of the Mexican State (SPREM) (2014–2018); a Citizen Advisor to the National System for the Comprehensive Protection of Children and Adolescents (SIPINNA), Ministry of the Interior (2016–2022); and a Citizen Advisor to the Television Channel of the Congress of the Union (Senate of the Republic, 2021–2024), Radio Ibero 90.9 of the Universidad Iberoamericana (2016–2022), and Radio Educación, Ministry of Culture (2022–2025).
He is the author of numerous books, scholarly essays, and journalistic articles on communication, culture, information, and politics in Mexico, Latin America, and beyond.
