Profile

Dr. Rafael Arturo Zubillaga Luna holds a Ph.D. in Science (1994), a Master’s degree in Chemistry (1987), and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (1984) from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Iztapalapa. He conducted his doctoral research at the Institute of Cellular Physiology of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) under the supervision of Dr. Armando Gómez Puyou. He has held research appointments at the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (UAB) in Barcelona, Spain (2011); the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology in Valencia, Spain (2000); the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth, Texas, USA (1992); and the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC, 1991). In 2011, he received the UAM Research Award, and in 2006 he became a founding member of the Physical Chemistry, Protein Structure and Design Division of the Mexican Society of Biochemistry. He serves as a peer reviewer for international scientific journals including Journal of Molecular Catalysis B: Enzymatic, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, and Thermochimica Acta (Elsevier), as well as the World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology (Springer), and acts as a scientific evaluator for CONAHCYT research proposals. He has supervised six doctoral dissertations and ten master’s theses.

He serves as a Full Professor (affiliated since 1996) in the Department of Chemistry within the Division of Basic Sciences and Engineering at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Iztapalapa.

His scholarly output includes 42 research articles published in indexed scientific journals. His research interests focus on the search for novel enzyme inhibitors of pharmacological interest and the search for novel prodrugs for diseases of national concern.
