Profile
Professor Rocío Ortiz Muñiz studied for a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, a Master's Degree, and a Doctorate in Science (Biology), at the Faculty of Sciences, at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). She rcame to the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Iztapalapa Campus to do her social service and bachelor's thesis in 1979.
She currently works at the Department of Health Sciences, CBS Division at the UAM Iztapalapa Campus, where she founded the Laboratory of Cell Biology and Flow Cytometry. She is in charge of the lines of work: "Study of the effects associated with malnutrition" and "Studies with flow cytometry (basic and clinical research)."
She is the author or co-author of 62 research publications and 15 books and/or book chapters. She has directed 12 bachelor's thesis, 8 Master's, and 15 Ph.D. theses (3 in development). In addition, she regularly participates in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. She has also participated in various Committees within the UAM, FES-Zaragoza, CONACYT, and PRODEP.
She was President of the Mexican Society of Genetics (2003-2005), and this Society awarded her the Recognition of Excellence in Genetics "Medalla León de Garay" (2013). Her group has twice earned the "Research Award in the Area of Biological and Health Sciences" awarded by the UAM. She has obtained the "Recognition of Full Time Teachers, granted by PROMEP (SEP, 2003 to 2021).
