Profile

Dr. Hernando Romero Paredes Rubio earned his degree in Industrial Chemical Engineering from ESIQIE-IPN in 1975, a Master’s degree in High-Temperature Thermodynamics in 1979, and a Ph.D. in Energetics with a specialization in Solar Energy from the University of Perpignan, France, in 1981.

He began his research career in 1975 at CINVESTAV-IPN, Mexico City, where he explored the development of photovoltaic solar cells. During his doctoral studies, he conducted research at the Solar Furnace of Odeillo (now PROMES-CNRS, France), focusing on thermochemical solar energy storage systems. This early work laid the foundation for his lifelong dedication to high-temperature solar energy conversion and storage.

Since 1982, Dr. Romero Paredes has served as a Full Professor–Researcher in the Department of Processes and Hydraulics at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Iztapalapa Campus, within the Area of Energy Resource Engineering. He actively contributes to research and education in solar thermochemistry, hydrogen production, solar energy storage, and energy efficiency. He has been a member of the National System of Researchers (SNII) since 2011 (with a previous period between 1986 and 1993) and has PRODEP recognition.

Dr. Romero Paredes pioneered solar thermochemical research in Mexico, directing innovative studies on hydrogen production, solar energy storage, and the gasification and pyrolysis of hydrocarbon materials for syngas (H₂, CO, CO₂) generation. Over the past four decades, he has led and participated in numerous research projects in the field of energy, designing and constructing several solar reactors to perform high-temperature chemical processes.

He also develops methods and methodologies for high-efficiency cogeneration systems in industrial, commercial, and service sectors, promoting sustainable energy practices in Mexico.

Dr. Romero Paredes has written over 70 papers in international indexed journals and more than 200 papers presented at national and international conferences. He led the Solar Fuels and Industrial Processes (COSOL) project under CEMIE-Sol, which brought together over 40 researchers from seven institutions, including collaborations with Spain and France.

As an educator, he has taught more than 300 undergraduate and graduate courses at higher education institutions and conducted nearly 100 professional training programs for national industries. He currently coordinates the Graduate Program in Energy and Environment within UAMI’s Division of Basic Sciences and Engineering.

Dr. Romero Paredes actively participates in professional and scientific communities. He co-founded several organizations, including the National Association for Solar Energy (1982), the Mexican Hydrogen Society (1999), the National Hydrogen Network (2005), and Cogenera México A.C. (2013).

He holds two patents, one developed for the chemical and cement industries (2002–2009) and another for a solar reactor (2015–2023). His expertise in solar thermochemistry and energy efficiency earned him the National Energy Savings Award twice (1993 and 2006) in the category of Educational and Research Institutions.

Through his research, innovation, and teaching, Dr. Romero Paredes continues to advance the fields of solar thermochemical energy and energy efficiency, training new generations of scientists and contributing to Mexico’s scientific and technological leadership in sustainable energy.
