Profile
Dr. Carlos Ornelas is a professor of Education and Communication at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM). He earned a Ph.D. in education from Stanford University in 1980.
His most recent books are Educational Policy in Latin America: reforms, resistance, persistence (Siglo XXI Editores, November 2020). Brill Sense Publishers published it in English in 2019: Politics of Education in Latin America: Reforms, Resistance and Persistence. And The fight for education: globalization, neo-corporatism, and democracy (Fondo de Cultura Económica 2018).
He has published seven books as an individual author, 13 as a coordinator or compiler, eight monographs, 91 peer-reviewed research articles published in specialized journals and collective books, 90 bibliographic essays, reviews, and popular articles. He has given 180 keynote lectures or presented papers at national and international academic meetings. He has been a member of 13 editorial committees (active in two) of professional journals and has taught 96 modules in bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees at the UAM Xochimilco Campus.
He has been a visiting professor at Harvard, Columbia, Hiroshima, Nagoya, and Iberoamericana. Also, at the Center for Economic Research and Teaching and the Tecnológico de Monterrey.
He is a national researcher emeritus. He is president of the Mexican Society of Comparative Education, a member of the Mexican Council for Educational Research, the Comparative and International Education Society, and the Latin American Studies Association. He was a founding member of the Mexican Section of the Club of Rome and an associate member from 1991 to 1995.
Among his distinctions stand out: COMIE Recognition of Merit "Pablo Latapí" 2015, granted by the Mexican Council for Educational Research; Recognition of Citizen Merit "José Vasconcelos" 2017, given by Suma for Education; and the G. W. Walker Best Paper Award, 2000, from the MCB University Press of England, for the article "The Politics of Educational Decentralization in Mexico, in the Journal of Educational Administration (Vol. 35, No. 2).
His research interests include Educational Policy: Educational Reforms; higher education; teachers' unions; comparative education, justice issues, freedom and inclusion in education, and international education development.
