Profile
Professor Carlos Tomás Quirino Barreda is PhD in Pharmacy (2001) from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain, with a bachelor's degree (1982) in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Biology (QFB) from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), Mexico, and his degree was homologated (2000) to Pharmacist by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Spain.
Academic Activity. Doctor Quirino-Barreda has 43 years of teaching and research experience developing and evaluating drug dosage forms and nanostructured drug delivery systems at Xochimilco Campus and five years as a visiting professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro (UAQ). He is the leader of the Academic Group of Molecular Pharmacy, Pharmacotherapy, and Pharmaceutical Care, registered like a research group in consolidation process (2022-2025) by the Ministry of Public Education of Mexico, and he trained researchers and professionals who have held or are currently working in management positions.
He has directed or supervised 80 theses in undergraduate programs in QFB, Industrial Design, and Graphic Design at UAM, as well as 24 master's theses in Pharmaceutical Sciences at UAM and Chemical Biological Sciences at UAQ and three doctoral theses in Biological and Health Sciences at UAM and Chemical Biological Sciences at UAQ. He has given about 70 lectures on topics related to his specialty in Spain, Portugal, Mexico and 8 Latin American countries. He is co-author of 53 scientific and dissemination articles, six books, eight book chapters, and five patents granted by the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI). He has also contributed to 7 editions and 13 supplements of the Mexican Pharmacopoeia (Farmacopea de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos, FEUM) since 2001, in addition to 2 editions of the Medical Devices Supplement and the 3.0 edition of the Herbal Pharmacopoeia of FEUM.
Academic-administrative and project management experience. Doctor Quirino-Barreda has been Coordinator of the bachelor's degree QFB program (1991-1993), Head of the Department of Biological Systems (1993-1997), Coordinator of Continuing Education at UAM (2001-2002), Coordinator of the Master Science program in Pharmaceutical Sciences (2003-2011) and Head of the Research Area of Pharmaceutical Technology (2012-2014).
He has been a professor representative in the CBS Divisional Council at UAM and participated in different university commissions, including those related to the design and restructuration study plans and programs in Dentistry (UPAGU, Peru) and QFB (UAM), and Master and PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences of UAM, also in generic projects of Legal Social Service of QFB and Industrial Design of UAM and the implementation of the Water Purification System (CEPAX) of UAM.
He has been responsible for Ibero-American educational projects, two funded by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (1998-2002; 2008-2010), one by the European Executive Agency for Education and Culture (2018-2022), one multi-professional (CBS-UAM Division) research of the Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnología del Distrito Federal (2011-2013), one CONACyT Research Chair (2013-2024), one project on educational programs (2019) and one research project (2020) of the UAMX Rector Calls, as well as two research projects concluded (1989-2023) that were registered in the CBS Divisional Council of UAM.
Professional activity. Since 2001, Doctor Quirino-Barreda has been collaborating as expert member of the General Methods of Analysis Committee in the Permanent Commission of the Mexican Pharmacopoeia (Farmacopea de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos, FEUM). He has participated as an expert in pharmaceutical patents in the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property and as an expert in chemistry in the Office of the Attorney General of the Mexican Republic. Also, he provides consulting services to companies about pharmaceutical products developing and evaluation.
Distinctions and awards. Dr. Quirino-Barreda is a member (2023-2027) of the National System of Researchers of Mexico, Level I, Section of Chemistry and Biology. Also, he participates in national and international academic networks and professional associations such as the Colegio de Químicos Farmacéuticos Biólogos México, the Cofradía Internacional de Investigadores de Toledo, Spain, and the Ibero-American Conference of Faculties of Pharmacy (COIFFA).
He has received awards for his scientific production as a member of the Pharmaceutical Technology Area of the UAM in 1992, 1993, 1995, 2014 and 2023. He has obtained a continued recognition (scholarships) and annual stimulus by the UAM, from 1991 to date, for his teaching activity and scientific production, training of human resources and dissemination of culture.
He is a referee of national and international indexed journals, and he is a member of the Advisory Board of the Editorial Team of the Ars Pharmaceutica Journal since May 17th, 2021. He was distinguished as honorary professor of the Universidad Privada Antonio Guillermo Urrelo (UPAGU) in Cajamarca, Peru, and visiting professor in different universities in Mexico, Bolivia and Peru.
In 2010, the College of Pharmaceutical Chemists and Biologists of Mexico awarded Doctor Quirino-Barreda for his Outstanding Professional Career. In 2019, he was appointed representative of UAM in the Directive Council of the Permanent Commission of the Mexican Pharmacopoeia (FEUM), and twice (2020) and (2023) elected by his peers in the Technical Council as the Executive Vocal of the Permanent Commission of the FEUM.
