Professor Roberto Gutiérrez Rodríguez teaches at the Department of Economics at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), Iztapalapa Campus, where he serves as head of the Department of Economics. He is a Bachelor's Degree in Economics professor and participates in the Social Economic Line of the Master's and Doctorate in Social Studies (MyDES). In addition, he collaborates as a professor in the Master in International Relations and the Doctorate in Social Sciences at the International Relations Line at UAM Xochimilco Campus. He has been a professor in the Master in Economics and Innovation Policy at the same Campus.
He was the winner of the 2016 Comercio Internacional Magazine Award in the Specialist category with the essay "The dual nature of Mexico's foreign trade with its main trading partners."
He is a Doctor in Social Economy from the UAM Iztapalapa; He has an MPhil in Economics from the University of Manchester, UK; a Master in Economics from CIDE, Mexico; He has a bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of the Americas-Puebla (UDLAP), and studied Development Studies at the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, UK, as well as a specialization at the American University in Washington, D.C.
He is the author and editor of several books, including: Present and Perspectives of the Energy Reform of Mexico. He is the author of the articles "Mexico's Energy Policy and Environmental Care: From the Constitutional Energy Reform to a New Initiative", Journal of International Business and Economics, December 2018; "Mexico's Energy Reform. Inconsistencies After Four Years of Operation" International Journal of Business and Social Sciences, September 2018, and "Mexico's Dual Trade", Journal of Global Economics, July 2017.
His article "Structural reforms in Mexico in the six-year term of Felipe Calderón: the energy", published in the journal ECONOMÍAunam, ranks as the most read on Elsevier's list, with 41,854 downloads as of February 5, 2020, 2.2 times more than the study listed second. In this same magazine, he has published other articles, including "Mexico 2016-2018: start of a new phase of inflationary disarray?", May-August 2019.
He is the co-author of various collective works, including Critical Visions Facing the Neoliberal Crisis, UAM Iztapalapa Campus, Mexico, 2017; Global Crisis, National Responses. The Great Recession in Latin America and the Asia Pacifico, Montevideo: Observatorio América Latina-Asia Pacífico, 2014; Exploring Spaces for Productive Integration between Latin America and Asia Pacific, Latin America-Asia Pacific Observatory, Montevideo: 2016, and is the author of around 70 peer-reviewed articles on international economics, energy economics, labor economics, industrial economics, economic development, the economy of technological change, information and communication technologies, social economy and external debt of Mexico and Latin America.
He has been an Economic Affairs Officer in the International Trade Unit of ECLAC-Mexico; delegate to the Directorate of Employment, Labor and Social Affairs of the OECD during the incorporation of Mexico to said body; delegate to the UN for the correction of the Computer Problem of the Year 2000 (Y2K); Researcher of the Energy Program of El Colegio de México, and official in various dependencies of the Federal Public Administration and the government of Mexico City.
