Profile

Professor Pedro Moctezuma Barragán received a bachelor's degree in Economics, with distinction from the National School of Economics of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). He earned a Ph.D. in Planning and Development from the Faculty of Social and Environmental Sciences at The University of Liverpool, England.

He is a member of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Governing Board; Coordinator of the Research Programme "Sierra Nevada"; Co-author of the UAM's university anthem; Counsellor for the UNAM's Sustainability, Environment and Institutions Seminar; Chairman of the Advisory Board Responsible for the Protected Nature Reserve "Cerro de El Faro" in San Rafael, Tlalmanalco; member of the National Coordination "Agua Para Todos Agua Para la Vida ".

He was awarded the medal Xochipilli for the Preservation of the Environment 2018 by the Town Council of Tlalmanalco; Award for Ecologic Merit of the State of Mexico 2008; Research Area Award 1997 for the project "Social and Environmental Alternatives for the southeast of the Metropolitan area in Mexico City". Member of the Advisory Technical Board of the National Park Iztaccihuatl-Popocatepetl-Zochiapan and of the Advisory Board of the Protected Natural Area of Santa Catarina.

Having developed a methodological and theoretical framework of Collaborative Planning, which involves inter-institutional multi-stakeholder strategies as well as a comprehensive monitoring of management stages from grass-roots organization and inclusive planning with the aim of project implementation. He is co-founder of the Ríos Amecameca y La Compañía Basin Commission; founder of the Advocacy Group for Integrated Solid Waste Management of the Sierra Nevada. He was co-founder of the Social Council Iztaccíhuatl; co-founder of the Unión de Colonos Inquilinos y Solicitantes de Vivienda Libertad A.C, member of its Executive Council, responsible for the Organizational Committee and Legal Representative; co-founder of the Continental Front of Community Organizations; co-founder of the Coordinadora Nacional del Movimiento Urbano Popular; co-founder of the Unión de Colonos de San Miguel Teotongo, the self-administered housing project, Cananea, El Molino and the urban project Benito Juárez, in Iztapalapa, Mexico City.

He was the founder and coordinator of the Socioeconomic Research Department, in the School of Economics, Campus Torreón of the Autonomous University of Coahuila (UAC); founder of the Grupo de Apoyo al Movimento Popular (GAMPO); and responsible for the creation of the Research Programme, Sierra Nevada. He has been a member of the University Programme for Metropolitan Studies and of the University Programme for Human Development in Chiapas at the UAM. He has been member of the UAM's Recourse Commission. He participated in the Sociology programme's curriculum redesign in UAM Iztapalapa Campus. He was a promoter and responsible for the planning and design of the Centre for Sustainability Incalli Ixcahuicopa.

He has coordinated the following research projects: Currently (2020): Democratization of the Decision-making Bodies over Water and Basins in Mexico, approved within the Research and Advocacy Projects on Basin Management and Knowledge, on the Socio-natural Water Cycle or the Common Good and Environmental justice, CONACyT. Past projects include: Strategies to mitigate climate change and its impact in a vulnerable sub-basin of the Mexico Basin and Integrated Basin Management: The Case of the Rio Amecameca and Rio La Compañía Sub-basin, Institute of Ecology, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana. Co-responsible for the Water Plan for the Ríos Amecameca and La Compañía Sub-basin. Responsible of the Diagnostics for the Ecological Planning Programs of Tlalmanalco, Chalco and Ixtapaluca, in the State of Mexico. The Management Program of the Natural Protected Area, the State park, "Cerro El Faro and Cerro Los Monos", with UAM and the State Commission of Natural Parks and Fauna of the State of Mexico. Geographic Information System for the "Ecological Planning of the Sierra Nevada, derived from the Agreement between the UAM and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. Coordinator of the Solid Waste Prevention and Management Programs of the Municipalities of Amecameca, Cocotitlán and Ozumba, in the State of Mexico. Responsible for the pilot project for the integrated management of Micro-basins in the Sierra Nevada Region, and responsible for the Environmental Management Instrument for the Sierra Nevada in collaboration with the Sub-Secretary for Planning and Environmental Policies of Semarnat. Responsible for the Sustainable Urban Development Program, southern subregion of the Cuautitlán Texcoco Valley, comprising eleven municipalities, in collaboration with the Colegio Mexiquense and the Secretary of Urban Development of the State of Mexico. Coordinator of the Municipal Development Plan of Amecameca de Juárez, State of Mexico. Co-author of the Municipal Development Plan of Tlalmanalco de Velázquez, State of Mexico.

Member of the National Commission for Reconstruction after the 1985 earthquakes; Advisor for the General Management of Urban Development of the Federal District Government in the elaboration of the Partial Programmes of Urban Development of the Cerro de La Estrella and the Sierra de Santa Catarina, Iztapalapa. Member of the Mexican Society of Planning and of Izta-Popo's Research's network. Responsible for the conservation, restoration, and public use in the Sierra de Guadalupe, Tláhuac's Branch office, in the Protected Natural and Conservation Area of the Sierra de Santa Catarina; promoter of the Health and Herbal Production Centre of the Women's Group, Ixchel de los Volcanes, in Tlalmanalco, State of Mexico, and responsible for the Plan, Ach Lecubtesel, Oxchuc, Chiapas.

Regarding environmental, social and spatial-urban topics, he has organized the Latin-American and Caribbean Encounter of Communal Organizations; four Citizen Congresses on Water Sustainability; nine National Encounters of the Popular Urban Movement; eight Regional Encounters for the Sustainable Development of the Sierra Nevada; he has participated in dozens of congresses, seminars, and symposiums as keynote speaker, moderator, participant, and commentator. He has published eight books, 28 book chapters, eighteen articles in scientific journals, three newspaper supplements, dozens of articles and videos, and round tables and radio and tv interviews.
