Professor Carolina Martínez Salgado is a surgeon from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) (1976). Teacher in Social Medicine from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) Xochimilco Campus (1979) and Doctor in Population Studies by the Colegio de México (1990). Scholarship of the population fund of the MacArthur Foundation (1992-1995). Teacher in psychoanalytic psychotherapy by Centro Eleia (2011) and has 100% doctoral credits in Psychoanalytic Clinic in Centro Eleia.
Since 1980 she has been a professor at the Department of Health Service of the UAM Xochimilco Campus, she has given courses in the postgraduates attended by the Department of Health Care for this University and from 1983, in the Bachelor of Medicine. She has also collaborated in teaching with other national academic institutions and countries.
At the UAM, she has occupied the position of Head of the Health and Society Research Area on three occasions, the last one in 2018. She has been a member of the Health Sciences area ruling commission on three occasions, the last one in the period 2017-2018. Between 1994 and 1999, she was part of the Doctoral Evaluation Commission in Biological Sciences of the UAM Xochimilco and Iztapalapa Campuses.
Outside the institution, she has been part of the Steering Committee of the Mexican Demography Society in the periods 1992-1994 and 1996-1998, of the Selection Committee for MacArthur Scholarships in the period 1996-1998, Member of the Biennial Award Qualifier of Demographic Research and the National Demography Award in 1998, member of the Selection Committee of the International Social Sciences and Humanities Program and Humanities Crim-UNAM / Rockefeller in 2004.
She is or has been an integral of the Mexican Demography Society, the Latin American Population Association, the Population Association of America, the International Union For The Scientific study of population, the American Anthropological Biological Society, the Qualitative Inquiry SOCIETY, and the Mexican Psychiatry Association.
Since 1989, she has been credited with scholarships and stimuli offered by the UAM to academic staff based on their production.
Author of more than 100 papers presented at specialized events, more than 80 scientific articles and book chapters, compiler of 3 books and author of 5 more books (two of them in co-authorship).
Her main lines of research are: the study of the regional distribution of health risks in Mexico (epidemiological approach); the study of the perception of risks and damage to health in popular urban families (qualitative approach); The study of the configuration of risks to mental health in Mexico (epidemiological and qualitative approaches); the role of the emotional dimension in health problems (qualitative approach); and the study of the doctor-patient relationship as an element of clinical quality of care (qualitative approach).
