Profile

Dr. María de los Ángeles Sánchez Bringas holds a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from the Institute of Anthropological Research at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), a Master’s degree in Sociology from the University of Manchester (United Kingdom), and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Anthropology from Universidad Iberoamericana. At UAM Xochimilco, she co-founded the Women, Identity, and Power Research Area, as well as the graduate programs in Women's Studies and Feminist Studies, where she served as Coordinator of the Master’s Program in Women's Studies. For ten years, she has directed the Permanent Seminar on Gender, Motherhood, and Reproduction and is an active member of the Thematic Network on Body and Embodiment Studies.

She serves as a Full-Time Professor in the Women, Identity, and Power Research Area within the Department of Politics and Culture of the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Xochimilco.

Her research focuses on reproductive health, gender and culture, maternal health, diverse motherhoods, and the evolution of sexual and reproductive practices in Mexico. She is the author of key academic books including Women, Motherhood, and Change and She Who Wears Yellow… Women in Mexican Proverbs, editor of specialized collective volumes, author of peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and an advisor on research projects related to abortion and reproductive rights.
