Introduction
The Oral Pathology and Medicine Unit (UPMB) operates as an academic, clinical, and research entity within the Department of Health Care at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Xochimilco Campus. Its primary goal is to detect, diagnose, and monitor diseases affecting the oral cavity and related structures, with an emphasis on conditions with malignant transformation potential and oral manifestations of systemic diseases.
The Oral Pathology and Medicine Unit bridges clinical practice, applied research, and postgraduate education. It not only provides specialized care to the community but also plays a key role in training students from the Bachelor’s Degree in Stomatology and developing highly qualified professionals through the Master’s Degree in Oral Pathology and Medicine.
Timely care for patients with suspicious oral lesions stands as one of its core priorities. The unit facilitates accurate diagnoses through clinical, cytological, and histopathological studies, enabling early detection of diseases such as oral cancer and contributing directly to improved prognoses and patients’ quality of life.
In addition to its clinical and academic functions, the Oral Pathology and Medicine Unit actively engages in oral health prevention, education, and community outreach. Its efforts include awareness campaigns, educational workshops, and collaborations with public health institutions.
This initiative became possible thanks to the support of the pharmaceutical company Neolpharma and the Secretariat of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation (SECTEI) of Mexico City’s government, through the awarding of the “Matilde Montoya 2023” Biological and Health Sciences Prize to Dr. Irma Gabriela Anaya Saavedra. This interinstitutional collaboration helped establish a high-quality clinical space that combines cutting-edge technology, social responsibility, and top-tier academic training.
The Oral Pathology and Medicine Unit includes facilities specifically designed to meet the highest standards in the diagnosis and treatment of oral and maxillofacial diseases. These areas feature specialized conditions that ensure both patient and staff safety, as well as precision in clinical and laboratory procedures.
In December 2024, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Xochimilco Campus, inaugurated a new Oral Pathology and Medicine Clinic located in Building D, strengthening its clinical, educational, and scientific infrastructure. Activities
Clinical Diagnosis
The Oral Medicine Clinic bases its evaluation of oral and maxillofacial lesions on comprehensive clinical histories, thorough physical examinations, and laboratory and imaging diagnostic aids. This process plays a key role in identifying potentially malignant lesions such as oral leukoplakia and erythroplakia, as well as early-stage oral cancer. Early detection allows for timely treatment, significantly improving prognosis and quality of life.
Histopathological and Cytological Diagnosis
To complement clinical diagnosis, the unit analyzes tissue samples (biopsies) and exfoliated cells from the oral mucosa in the Oral Pathology Laboratory. These procedures allow for accurate diagnosis of a wide range of oral pathologies, including inflammatory, infectious, benign, and malignant tumors. The results guide appropriate treatment and clinical follow-up.
For more than four decades, the Oral Pathology Laboratory has provided histopathological and cytological diagnostic services to national and international public, private, and educational institutions. In recent years, it has expanded with the addition of a Molecular Biology Laboratory, offering advanced studies for viral, neoplastic, and immunological conditions. This infrastructure supports both faculty research projects and graduate theses from the Master’s Degree in Oral Pathology and Medicine, using high-precision diagnostic tools such as immunohistochemistry, PCR, and genetic sequencing.
As part of its diagnostic role, the Oral Pathology Laboratory maintains a detailed chronological database of all studies performed, including exam dates, test types, diagnoses, and case sources. This system ensures process traceability and quality, while also contributing to epidemiological surveillance of oral and maxillofacial diseases and supporting clinical, institutional, and public health decision-making.
Educational and Preventive Activities
The unit promotes oral health and disease prevention through its work at partner sites such as the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán, the General Hospital Dr. Manuel Gea González, and the Condesa Specialized Clinics (Roma and Iztapalapa). It also offers continuing education courses, workshops, symposia, conferences, early detection campaigns, and outreach materials. These activities target both the general public and vulnerable populations, aiming to foster self-care and reduce oral disease prevalence.
The clinic’s establishment responds to a critical public health need: untreated oral diseases currently affect nearly half of the global population, with over one billion new cases in the past 30 years. These conditions cause pain, infection, and functional loss, and also impact emotional, mental, and social well-being. The UPMB focuses its efforts on early diagnosis, active prevention, and comprehensive care with a strong awareness of the social determinants of health.
Research and Teaching
Beyond clinical services, the UPMB stands out as a center of academic excellence and high-impact international research. Its faculty includes nationally and internationally recognized specialists whose scientific work has positioned UAM as a leader in studying oral cancer, oral manifestations of HIV/AIDS, potentially malignant oral disorders, HPV in the oral cavity, and odontogenic tumors and cysts. Most of the team are members of the National System of Researchers (SNII), and their publications are widely cited. This group has produced pioneering contributions in oral pathology and medicine, placing UAM at the forefront of this field. Current research lines include: (a) oral cancer, (b) oral manifestations of HIV infection, and (c) diseases of the oral mucosa and jaws.
Since its origin in 1979 as a specialization program, postgraduate training in oral pathology has evolved into the current Master’s Degree in Oral Pathology and Medicine. Throughout this journey, the academic team has led notable clinical and basic research in three priority areas: oral and head and neck cancer, oral manifestations of HIV/AIDS, and inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic jaw diseases. Notable projects include HPV typing in vulnerable populations, immunohistomorphological analysis of odontogenic tumors and salivary glands, and molecular characterization of oral lesions at risk of malignant transformation. These studies, carried out in collaboration with institutions such as the National Cancer Institute, the General Hospital Dr. Manuel Gea González, and international universities, have improved diagnostic, classification, and treatment criteria for various oral pathologies.
Additionally, the unit houses the social service project Oral Pathology and Medicine Clinic, approved by the Divisional Council of Biological and Health Sciences (Session 22/24). This program actively involves faculty and students from the Bachelor's degrees in Stomatology and Nursing in detection, diagnosis, treatment, and clinical guidance in oral health. This interdisciplinary experience strengthens professional training and broadens service coverage for priority community groups.
The UPMB also serves as a key hub for training highly specialized professionals through its involvement in postgraduate programs like the Master’s Degree in Oral Pathology and Medicine and the Doctorate in Biological and Health Sciences. Each year, it welcomes undergraduate students performing their social service who join clinical, educational, and research projects—demonstrating the UPMB’s commitment to comprehensive training and the interdisciplinary, collaborative approach that defines UAM’s educational model.
